Over 30 years, we've learned a simple but important lesson: markets change. The firms that last are not the ones that bet everything on a single segment, but the ones built to adapt. That's why AKS intentionally serves three core markets today: Land Development, Infrastructure, and Power. Together, they create a balanced, resilient strategy that helps us grow with purpose.
A Strategy Built on Experience
In our early years, we took on a little bit of everything to build momentum and relationships. But as residential development took off in the early 2000s, we became increasingly concentrated in land development, particularly residential subdivisions. As our reputation grew, so did opportunity.
Then came the 2008 recession. Going into this, we were heavily concentrated on residential work, and many projects disappeared almost overnight. Fortunately, we have always been nimble and have relied on our adaptability, relationships, and team to hold our own through this difficult time. That moment became a defining reset, as we broadened our focus and pursued more diversified work.
The lesson stuck: markets go in cycles, and diversity is key to success. Since then, we’ve diversified by design, first by strengthening our position in Infrastructure and more recently by expanding into Power. Today, those markets, alongside Land Development, form a balanced three-market strategy that helps us stay resilient, responsive, and ready for what’s next.
The Three Markets We Serve Today
Land Development
Land Development was the first market we entered in 1996, and it remains the market where we do the most work today. It is also where we built much of our early reputation, helping transform raw land into active communities. In many ways, Land Development is where AKS found its footing. It remains a large part of who we are and how we help communities grow.
Infrastructure
Infrastructure represents a key part of our history. While public and infrastructure-related work existed earlier in our story, this market became a major strategic focus after 2008, which reinforced the importance of diversification. Since then, we've continued to grow our ability to support the essential systems communities rely on every day while strengthening long-term relationships with cities, jurisdictions, and public agencies.
Power
Power is the newest of our three core markets and reflects where we see opportunity ahead. As energy systems modernize and demand continues to grow, this market positions us to support critical infrastructure tied to reliability, resilience, capacity, and long-term service needs.
Better Together
Quick quiz! Which of the following is true?
A) Markets change
B) The strongest companies are built to adapt
C) Diversification creates resilience
D) All of the above
If you answered "D," you're right. That's exactly what makes AKS's three-market approach work. Land Development, Infrastructure, and Power are not just separate markets. They are complementary parts of a stronger whole. Together, they create the balance, flexibility, and resilience that help us stay nimble, pursue the right opportunities, and continue growing with purpose as client needs and market conditions evolve. In other words, we're better together!
