Avista Wildfire Mitigation Surveying: Enhancing Safety Through Utility Relocation

AKS partnered with Avista Utilities on a grant-funded wildfire mitigation project to reduce wildfire risk by relocating overhead power lines underground. Our team delivered comprehensive land surveying services, including boundary and right-of-way research, field verification, resolution, and staking. Much of this work is being performed in remote areas in Northeastern Washington and Northern Idaho.

Problem

Wildfire Risk

Wildfire risk in the region posed a significant threat to both critical infrastructure and surrounding communities, particularly in fire-prone areas with overhead power lines.

Solution

A Move Below Ground

To support the transition to underground utilities, our team conducted detailed boundary, easement, and right-of-way research, working closely with title companies to obtain and verify critical documentation. These findings were analyzed and translated into precise AutoCAD drawings to guide staking, ensuring all underground infrastructure was placed within approved easements and corridors.

Result

Lower Risk, Greater Reliability

The successful move from overhead to underground infrastructure reduced wildfire ignition potential while improving long-term system reliability. Through proactive coordination, precise surveying, and clear communication, the project moved forward efficiently and in compliance with regulatory requirements.
